from a reasonable distance away while orbiting around it?

I'd love to be able to observe any celestial body from a space ship. Just being able to go somewhere truly amazing like space would be incredible. I think the thing to do to get the most bang for the buck would be to go on a highly eccentric orbit so that you get to see it from so close that it would fill your entire field of view (provided you had adequate radiation shielding) just to give you an idea how amazingly huge it is. Then at apogee, you'd get to see the whole planet against the backdrop of space.

A good tour would swing by Io in the hopes of catching some eruptions. Also, a projection on the window showing the apparent size of Earth from that distance as a comparison might help take in the "awesomeness" of the sight as well.

Now I'm all psyched, and there's no H.A.L. to get me to Jupiter! Dang!

You've been watching "2010" haven't you?

I'd imagine it to be an incredible experience. Flying at a really low orbit it would look less like a planet and more like a giant wall. Although I'd be more interested in Europa, though.

This is Jupiter up close from a BBC drama about space travel. An excellent series.

Awesome! I just got a glimpse of the spaceship in orbit last night. I looked to the North and found it moving. It only lasted 30 seconds and it was amazing to think that the crew was up there!

You'd have to be going a heck of a lot faster to avoid falling into it. Also, it'd be fun to dodge moons and all that stuff. Jupiter has a nice collection of personal asteroids in two groups that are near it so you should fly through those as well.

I'm not trying to suggest somebody goes and gets themselves killed. That's seriously what I would do if I had my own spaceship near Jupiter.

Probably amazing. Not only because of the sheer scale of Jupiter but because you would be 500 million miles from home.

It would be beautiful, nay, sublime- both fascinating, and searingly lonely and frightening.

Two voices speak at the same time;

'it is an unparallelled jewel in the heavens'
'I will never live to tell what I have seen'

Awesome.

What would be even cool-er is to do it looking up in a space suit, walking on Ganymede or Europa.
