If you mean a fighting pet, Rangers can use Charm Animal on a green animal, and as long as you and it survive to the end of the skills charge bar, it will become your new combat pet.

If you mean one of the toy pets you see aronud towns, those are given to CHARACTERS that are a year old or older. You could buy one from another player, but they will be REALLY expensive.

Heroes at Your Command
Guild Wars has always had NPC henchmen you could use to fill out your party on missions, but Nightfall takes this concept a step further. It introduces a new kind of henchmen called Heroes, which are unlocked as you progress through the storyline and can then be added to your group in any town. Unlike henchmen, Heroes level alongside your character and you have full access to their skills and equipment. You can outfit them and tweak their builds in much the same way that you can with your own character.

In battle you can bring up an action bar for each Hero that gives you access to their skills and a few other controls. You can move them around either individually or as a group by placing flags on the minimap or the play field. It’s nice to have this added control over NPCs, and it adds an entirely new dimension to the game, even though you have to rely on the AI a lot because it’s very difficult to manage more than your own character and a couple Heroes in real time.

Another nice thing about Heroes is that they are a great way to explore the multitude of skills and builds in Guild Wars without giving up a character slot.

One curious aspect of Heroes is that they do tend to encourage solo play, which is a little odd for a multiplayer game. You can complete the entire Nightfall campaign with only Heroes and henchmen if you so desire. Assuming they are at the keyboard, I think even novice players are better than the AI-controlled Heroes, but Heroes are reliable, and they never complain if you suddenly go AFK for 20 minutes.

The world of MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) gaming can be quite daunting for newcomers. If you’ve never played such a gaming title in the past, you could be forgiven for feeling more than a little overawed. You’re suddenly surrounded by thousands of gamers, all of which seem to know exactly what to do, and precisely what’s going to need to be done to beat the game. So taking into account the cost of the initial purchase, plus the required monthly subscription, most seem happy to continue getting their multiplayer action on their home consoles.

But here comes Guild Wars from NCsoft. Now Guild Wars is quite a different beast from the likes of World of Warcraft or Everquest. While these games rely on monthly subscriptions to cover all kinds of costs, with Guild Wars you never pay anything more than the initial purchase in your local gaming emporium. Again, where the other big hitters in the genre require incredible numbers of hours put in, in order to get to any kind of decent in game level, Guild Wars requires you to display your intelligence and skill. With the in game level cap set at 20, which is reachable in quite speedy time, your own skill is required if your going to ‘beat’ the game.

The same way you obtain a pet in the other 2 games. Rangers can use the Charm Animal skill to tame a tameable animal.
