Because it's there!

Think about a time before Skype. Think perpetual, persistent Beta.

Skype needs a backbone, and to be on better terms with the wire people. People thought the Vodafone decision was a trip. Skype leap-frogs it.

It won't go away.

We can only hope that when the VoIP forces finally prevail, Skype is still around. Or we'll have the same ole telco demons protecting the same ole monopoly.

The issue is the Internet is not designed to provide voice transport. VoIP requires voice packets to transfer without packet loss or packet delay. This requires tagging the packets for priority and providing priority over data transport. The internet does not provide priority to voice packets. When even slight congestion happens packets are delayed and lost - and voice quality deterioriates.

It is not the particular VoIP carrier; it is in fact the limit of the internet itself. By the way, IPv6 standards do not call for voice priority. Currently we use IPv4 and I believe IPv6 is not set to be deployed for about 10 years so we will have a long wait.

Introduce yourself to over loaded lines/satellites, etc. I don't foresee change in near future as will take the companies time to get enough power for their customers. All Yahoo email users are going through the same thing.

Because the Internet Service Provider is over saturated with users.

yes.. too many people using the service. If you wanna want to have fun with VOIP then you can either use EKIGA (linux) or Asterics orrrrr you can use dedicated service providers like VONAGE or others.. oh by the way ekiga and asterics work on windows as well.
