Drivers manual? You get them at the DMV I dont know if they're available online. And yes to get your permit you only have to pass the written test, which is sometimes easier said than done. They asked me crazy questions when I took mine like "what exact day are you supposed to put the snow tires on a truck?" how am I supposed to know and why?! Good luck anyway.

I believe "that little book thingy" is called a Manual/Driver's Handbook, and...
Depending on your state's website, they should have an online PDF version, that you can download and save or print. You can also get one for free at your local Department of Motor Vehicles.
Check with your local DMV for a checklist of what you need in order to get your permit, as it may vary by state. But I believe the basics are: your state I.D., Social Security Card, true full name, birth date and proof of legal presence (birth certificate), pay the fees, and pass the test.

You can ask your parents to buy you that book or ask one of your friends if you can borrow it,...I'm not sure where you buy it. If you do get the book, you have to do is read the grey part of it, and the signs and you can go to google and type in practice test for permit. And study until you know you can go to the DMV and pass. I did really well on it, you can't miss more then 7 or you have to take it again, but its not hard at all...you'll do fine.

It is the book of traffic laws presented for the public to use.
They are free at DMV. Online will depend on state, probably in PDF format if there.

properly its a shame you hate the only element that could get you out of the jam your in now. Hating interpreting is the main asinine element i think of I ever heard. How else do you intend to check something? osmosis? Your going to spend something of your existence learning to study I recommend you get used to it and study to like it. considering is the only element protecting you out of detention center and hardship. solid success with that.
