There are a number of different places named Salamanca. The most historically significant is probably the city (and province) in western Spain, near Portugal.

The province of Salamanca situated in the South-west corner of Castile & León in Spain on the borders with Portugal ( Okay, i copied that off of google...but who cares!? )
