Mostly they're a fashion accessory. I'll exclude proper Land Rovers from this generalisation, as that's what you buy if you need an off road vehicle, but other than percieved 'kudos' there's no logical reason for buying a Chelsea Tractor, when a prestige estate car ( BMW 5-series / Merc E-class etc) or a people carrier ( Renault Espace or similar) will do the ferrying sprogs / carrying stuff just as well, for less money, in a nicer-to-drive vehicle.
I think what people hate about these things, rather than any environmental / size issue is the arrogance of their drivers, and the conspicuous consumption of using a three tonne truck to transport one little woman and two even littler sprogs, when they'd all fit in a Clio.
I'm no eco-weenie, but come on folks, if you're going to be pilloried by vast numbers, at least do it because you're driving something decent, like a big Jag, or an S-class Merc!

I Don't Hate them. But I hate how many there are and how few are actually used for the purpose they were designed for; as off road utility type vehicles, not swanky status symbols.
What annoys me about them:
Wreck everything else in sight if there's a crash
Use massive amounts of fuel/earth's natural resources
Too often used to take kids to school and go to the shops which you could do in ordinary sensible car.

Love them. My husband has a FSJ with a great set up. It's not a status symbol for us because it's not purty but get's the job done and does it well!
We prefer the hardcore trails, none of this mamby pamby girly crap, so yes, we do need it for our off road capability.
As far as people thinking that it's an extension for the guy, not in my man's case!

Loathe them. They trash the environment, look stupid, are dangerous (they're more likely to be involved in accidents and to flip over), most people can't drive them and they always strike me as compensation for being bald, fat, impotent, ugly or powerless.

I am a female. I have a 4 x 4. I pull my horse trailer with it. I have also used it to help others in a jam. I would rather have the 4x4 package and rarely use it, then get into a situation where I need it and don't have it.

I find they are an extension of a man's penis....they're generally not used for off-road capability, in fact most people won't even pull over on a narrow road for you to pass in case they get a bit of mud on their wheel trims....

I think most men buy them to compensate for an inadequate penis, apparently the bigger the 4 x 4 the smaller the member..or the man....
