i think that is the role organized religion has enjoyed. is religion a form of mythology?
given the right to hold dominion over the earth and her creatures (gen 1:27) we have taken that as a foundation, and added such absurdities as man's destiny and god's will (not absurd in and of itself, but absurd in that each of us believe we know god's will in the sense of what is best for us, not for the earth) to help us sleep at night while the earth is slowly shattered.
there were warnings issued in native north american myths about the excesses of greed and gluttony: the fear of the wendigo spirit served to discourage these vices among chippewa and cree. but science and technology have rendered the wendigo obsolete.
our belief that we are an entitled race has led us to think of ourselves as beings with super powers. exploitation is never so easy as when it's encouraged...

Every adult human that has some hope left has some mythology of his/her purpose and destiny in existence. A wee baby with out any knowledge except his/her mother and her milk may have no conception of why he/she exists but the instinct is in all of them to find out. Babies are the most curious of animals. They will soon come up with a myth by asking, exploring or being taught it. It is, I think, one of our most basic instincts to do so. In reality this instinct for curiosity is our source of hope and to lose hope is to mentally die.
Mythology and religion are important to our mental well being
Good luck with your personal myth, good health, peace and love!

at the dawn of human agriculture humans, their livestock and pets, accounted for 1/10th of 1% of the vertabrate land mass. now we control 98% of all vertabrate land mass. life is just like a very thin coat of paint on this planet, and we now hold the paint brush, belief in god im afraid allows people to deny responsibility for the power we now weild. i have this sneaking suspision that god is a man made idea and that this world wasn't made for us, i don't think hes gonna come and save us so we need to start taking action and start to understand the consequences of our actions.
