Check with your local court to make sure that they do not require mandatory forms. If they do then form books and standardized forms from software will not be acceptable by the court. In Washington, all family law forms are mandatory forms developed by the court and failure to use the forms may result in being forced to refile using the proper forms and a forfeiture of your original filing fee. Divorce can be done easily by a non-lawyer (assuming the parties are amicable), but make sure you understand the court's requirements and procedures before going in and trying to file a petition. If you have any doubts, get a lawyer or if you are in a lower income bracket check with your local bar association to see if you can get free legal assistance with the forms.

I filed my own divorce. In my state, the court only accepts certain forms. I called my county clerk and had them tell me where to purchase the acceptable forms. The cost was about $15.00.

After I got the forms, I filled them out and filed them. The filing fee was $180.00. I then had to run from room to room at the courthouse to have various copies properly filed. After that, I had a friend serve my ex and sign the proof of service in front of a notary. Then, I took the proof of service back to the court and properly filed it.

I got a court date for three months later. Since my husband was agreeable to the divorce, we requested the judge grant the divorce that day. I walked out an hour later a free woman!

Good Luck to you!

Not sure if they are legal or not. But, afterwards, you need an atty to help legalize matters, and take before a judge to sign off. Just make sure you have all your bases covered. It may be worth a bit of money to get an atty to draw up papers if you/ex have things agreed upon prior to, and aren't gonna give each other any surprise "wish list" in the court room. Everything has to be 100% agreeable to each party to be un-contested. Good luck.
