oh sugar, what kind of girl are you?
Every girl should know how to spot a fake!
Your best bet is to take it to a jeweler.
But, you CAN avoid buying fake diamonds.
First, ask for a GIA certificate for the stone. If they dont have one, it's not real.
Check the setting. Fake diamonds, such as zirconias, are usually set in low quality metals and cheap mounts.
Take a close look at the stone. Fake diamonds are not durable – natural diamonds, on the other hand, are the most durable stone on the planet. Look for scratches or nicks.
After purchasing a diamond, take it to another jeweler for appraisal. In fact, take it to two or three other jewelers for an appraisal to make sure that the appraisals are all fairly close.
Cubic Zirconia's are the easiest to spot.
They're much heavier in weight than a typical diamond. It is also softer and easier to scratch than a diamond.
A Cubic Zirconia can be spotted using ultraviolet light as well. Where diamonds will glow blue under UV light, Cubic Zirconia will glow mustard yellow.
Be careful tho - Moissanite's are a man-made stone that has been specifically engineered to mimick a diamond. It's nearly impossible to tell w/out conducting scientific research on it.
No matter how old or young you are.....there's no better time to start your diamond collection then right now!
Happy Hunting!

If you have a way to do so, look under at least 10X magnification. If it's fake, you'll see imperfections (scratches, chips, wavy lines, etc.) on the surfaces of the facets. If you don't see these, it still may be fake. But, at least you can readily identify a fake with the imperfections.
If you aren't sure or don't have the magnification tool, take it to a jeweler. They will look at it first to find these imperfections. If they can't tell by visual inspection, they have a device that shines a laser light on the jewel. Carbon (what diamonds are made of) absorb light in specific spectra and the meter will tell immediately if it's real.

You can test it by seeing if it will slightly scratch another diamond or any kind of glass, diamond is what is used to cut diamonds and glass into certain shapes. I'm suggesting this in case you can't afford to have a jeweler look at it.

for one a CZ will be more sparkly then a diamond.
contrary to popular belief diamonds are a bit dull inside but "look deep". meaning that if you look at it from the top it seems to go on while a manmade CZ has a definite finishing point not found in nature. A CZ is polished to always have that sparkly look. As for glass if it's cut to look like a diamond then it will defintely distort everything.

Take it to a respectable jewelry store and have them test it with their diamond tester. It's a small machine with a probe on it and all they do is touch the stone and the machine will tell if it's the real thing. This is a free test. My sister has one in her jewelry store. Moisanites are REAL man made diamonds. Difference between the two is Moisanites are perfect and diamonds are not. I have one it's beautiful and real.

diamonds can cut glass, if you have a small piece of glass from a broken vase or something else try dragging the stone across it if it makes a mark then its a diamond if it doesn't then it's something else and you should go to a jeweler and have them check it out.

Diamonds glow purple in a dark room with a black light. Weird, but true.
You could also take it to a jeweler and ask them...

Two choices, take it to a jeweler or see if it will cut glass.
