I put 2 angelfish and one yellow gourami in my 55 gallon tank yesterday, which i started on saturday. One of the angels died, after swimming upside down, lying on the bottom, swimming vertically, not moving, and being stuck to the filter. what was wrong with it? the other 2 fish seem fine

Angel fish are not very good fish to start with. Your tank has to go through the nitrogen cycle befor you can start adding more delicate fish. Do you have a test kit to test your water for pH amonia nitrite and nitrate? When a tank is new all of these water parameters are gonna go out of line and can cause your fish to get ill and die. The tank needs to gain more beneficial bacteria that breaks down the waste produced by the fish. Since the tank is new you dont have enough of that bacteria in the tank that can handle the bio load of all the fish you have. Some fish are less sensitive than others Angel fish are one of the more sensitive ones. So i assume you either have high ammounts of ammonia in the water and or high ammount of nitrites. Both of these will poison your fish. If you notice any of the other fish sitting near the filter return, in the bubbles, laying on the gravel, or swimming eradicly this is good indication one or more of those levels are out of line. You should check the water to find out what the problem is and if one of those levels is too high you should do a 25%-30% water change. that will help bring the levels down to something somewhat more tolerable for the fish. By doing water changes now in a new tank that hasnt cycled than you are prolonging the process but is neccesary to keep the fish alive.
Another thing that could be a problem is you dont have enough disolved oxygen in the water. Adding a airstone isnt really gonna help as much as some might think. Oxygen gets into the tank through the water surface so disturbing the water surface will help more oxygen to get in the tank. one way to disturb the water surface is to fill the tank a little less so the filter return makes more of a waterfall effect that will break the tension on the waters surface. hope this helps and go JETs this is our year haha

do you mean a honey gourami which is a yellow colour with a hint of orange?
how big is the gourami while they don't grow that big the same size as a dwarf gourami, they are aggressive towards other slow moving fish.
they are better kept with certain loaches ,large tetras
angels are slow moving fish and don't do well with the honey gouramis,
were yor angels a pair one male one female you can tell the difference by there dorsal fins ,
the gouramiis it male or female it could of be a terrortorial thing,
its more than likely it was the honey gourami ha killed you angel, they need to be in pairs being a terrortorial thing

Its probably dying and is mostly getting blown by the current... Some fish just die! Angelfish especially, but they become hardy little suckers when you have them for a while in a nice environment :) I suggest if its doing that there isn't much to do. Flush it. Take it from its suffering. It isn't going to live.

sorry to hear and sorry to say, but most likely the other 2 will die as well since your tank is NOT cycled
Angles are extremly sensitive and need to be put into a fully cycled tank
Here is a link on how to do that
http://www.firsttankguide.net/cycle.php

As soon as your nitrites and ammonia levels are at "0" and your nitrate tests start to show a reading, your tank is cycled

your angel died through an ammonia spike in your tank

Hope that helps
Good luck

You could of got a sick one from the petstore. ♥ Sorry, I'm not much of an angelfish expert. They are cute, though!
