I lived in Gilberts for a while, in one of the new communities that had been sprouting like mushrooms over former farmland over the last few years. Lots of superstores and malls along Randall Rd, good accessibility to the Northwest Tollway.
I'd be wary of stressed infrastructure. Roads that handle lots of traffic. Schools having to support a lot of students on a limited budget, which means requests for tax increases inevitably turned down by the anti-tax forces, leading to teacher layoffs every so often.
Good luck.
BTW, that's Algonquin...

It depends what you're looking for in the town. Elgin is by far the largest of the cities, it is the most ethnically diverse as well. It is nearest to the tollways, trains, and has city buses. The schools there are fairly good from what I hear. Carpentersville is a large hispanic area and they are having problems with the local government right now from what I have read in the newspaper. Algonquin is pretty expensive to live in, fair schools, not a lot to offer as far as things to do in the town, but you are surrounded by a lot of the other towns. Hope this helps

My sister lives in Elgin and the schools there are horrible. Bad teachers and lots of gangs. Especially in South Elgin. It definitely makes the housing more affordable though.
I used to live in Carpentersville. Right now there are lots of problems with shooting there. One was actually in the neighborhood I used to live in. Glad I got out of there.
I live near Algonquin now. It's your best bet. Great schools and nice neighborhoods. The prices are very reasonable and an overall beutiful town. Algonquin commons is a great strip mall that has most of the major stores you could want.
Hope I've helped.

I am currently living in California but moved here 5 years ago from Algonquin, Ill. I would say that Algonquin would be your best choice from the list you gave. There has been new housing going on in that area for the past 15 years without stopping. Prices cover all price ranges from $100,000 to $400,000 and of course over those numbers but within that range you can find great housing and new neighborhoods.
Look in the area to the south of Algonquin road and west of Randall road. A lot of new housing and a tremendous shopping area on Randall road and Algonquin road intersection. It is like having the choices of a big city but living in a small town.

I went back 2 years ago for my 45th High School reunion to Crystal Lake which is just NW of these cities and was stunned at how much was crammed into spaces that had been comfortable before. The main highway (14) looked like the worst of suburban retail in Plano (TX) and those areas which had been built up since I left were monster McMansions stuffed zero lot line. When discussing schools the one high school I graduated from in 1960 (with a second opened in the next two years) is now one of about 5 in divided school districts (that may include Algonquin) and junior high's are peppered all over the place - my classmates had trouble tracking them all. I wouldn't move back.

I live in Illinois and if I was going to relocate, I would move to Elgin. Elgin is on the edge of the suburbs but still allows for excellent economic opportunities. But why would you ever want to move away from California.

I live near there in Crystal Lake. Elgin and Cville are not too great. Alot of crime and problems. Algonquin is a good town though. Be ready, McHenry County has exploded in population and gets very busy traffic wise. But it is ok here. I also used to live in California.

Stay away from Landford, Ill. You might run into Roseanne and Dan Conner. :)
