Well, try to look at from their side. Let me tell you my story.... I was healthy and very active up until my last year of college. Then things started to go wrong. At first we thought it was isolated things, but then about 8 years into it, we learned that I have a progressive neurological disorder where my autonomic nervous system doesn't function properly, therefore none of my body does. I fought through it, decided I was going to be in the 10% that isn't permanently disabled by it, trained my own service dog, nearly took my employer to court over the right to have him at work, refused to let bring me down. Then, about 10 months after my diagnosis, I started having seizures, and was eventually diagnosed with a non epileptic seizure disorder. That took me down. All of a sudden I was faced with the fact that the life I had dreamed for myself couldn't happen. When that happens to someone, they go through a cycle of grief. You have to let people go through that, and it can take a long time. Personally, I can't say I've reached acceptance, but I'm getting there. My disability will keep me from working unless and until they find a treatment and/or cure. Most of my days, it is all I can do to do the basics of life. It's hard to accept, especially seeing as Im only 33. I keep saying, "When I get better I want to...." but the reality is that I have 2 rare neurological disorders which most people have never heard of, and there is no treatment or cure, just symptom management. But, if you were to see me on a "good day", you wouldn't think anything was wrong with me other than the fact that I wear a 115 lb service dog, a cooling vest, and pretty soon, a helmet. So, try having compassion. Try realizing that you don't know their story. Maybe they are still grieving the life that they have lost and are in the process of trying to figure out the life that lays ahead of them. Maybe there is a lot more to their story than you know.
