Can utility wires running from the pole to the front of the house be relocated?

Where i live now has underground utilities. I was looking at a house that seems really nice except it has 2 big utility wires running from the pole by the curb, hanging across the lawn, and attaching onto the front of the house in a very visible spot. This looks ugly as hell and I wonder if I can have these wires from the pole to the house removed and run underground? How much would it cost?

It definitely can be done, but it all depends on your local utility company whether they will do it. Having underground electrical service requires a street level transformer and enclosure, which can be expensive. Unless they are planning on doing the whole area, the overhead lines on the street will stay, because they still have to get power to the ground level box. Once that's done, you need to have your electrical service connection in the house re-configured (power comes into your breaker box now through a metal mast connection). It will need to be re-wired to an underground connection. Same with your telephone and cable connections, although they probably won't be as difficult or costly. Underground services are becoming the norm in newer residential developments, but you don't often see retrofitting in older neighbourhoods because of the cost involved.

Yes, it can be done, though if the utility company is willing to do it, they are going to charge you a bundle and utility companies are typically quite slow on these types of issues (it 1 1/2 years just for them to remove an old utility pole from my yard).

It is possible to look into a sub-contractor, that way the utility company would only have to inspect the work. Some place will allow a certified subcontractor to do the hook ups, while others absolutely will not.

The best way to find out is call the local utility companies. Likely electric and telephone. They may already be obsolete and no one thought to remove them. Do the other houses in the same area have the same configuration? It's probably copper, but I certainly hope you're not thinking about trying to take it down for the wire, you could get killed. Even if there's no electricity to the house, that wire could be live.

yes you can but to have the wires moved to undergroud and to put a electric box put in would cost you an arm and a leg so i hope you have extra of these otherwise a whole lot of money and if you have that much money then pay everyone in the world 1 penny instead then you would feel better ha ha ha
