Please explain to me these two problems.

Determine the slope of the line passing through each pair of points:

A(5,2), B(7,12)

heres another problem: P(-1,4), Q(5,-5)

thanks

1.
(12 - 2) / (7 - 5) = 10/2 = 5

2.
(-5 - 4) / (5 - -1) = -9/6 = -3/2

To find the slope of a line with two points, (x, y) and (m, n), use this formula:

Slope = (n - y)/(m - x)

Now, plug in the two points you have given, A(5, 2) and B(7, 12):

Slope = (12 - 2)/(7 - 5)

Now subtract 2 from 12 and 5 from 7:

Slope = (12 - 2)/(7 - 5)
= Slope = 10/2

Divide 10 by 2 to get your answer:

Slope = 10/2
= Slope = 5

This is your answer.

For the second problem, use the same formula:

(-5 - 4)/(5 - (-1)) = Slope

Now subtract 4 from -5 and -1 from 5:

(-5 - 4)/(5 - (-1)) = Slope
= -9/6 = Slope

Now put -9/6 into simpilest form by dividing the top and bottom by 3:

-9/6 = Slope
= -3/2 = Slope

This is the answer.

Hope this helps.

Slope = change in y over change in x
Slope = rise over run (rise means up and down, so therefore corresponds to the y-values, run means across, so therefore corresponds to the x-values)

Either way you have to subtract the y-values, subtract the x-values and divide y/x
Note: Be careful when you are subtracting, you must subtract the x's in the same order that you subtracted the y's.

Ex: A(5,2) B(7,12)
Your y-values are 2 and 12
Your x-values are 5 and 7

So subtract your y's 2-12 = -10
And subtract the x's 5-7 = -2
Now divide -10/-2 = 5
**What I mean by subtracting the same order is
Since you subtracted 2-12, the 2 came first, so when you do the x's you have to subtract the x that went with that y first, which is the 5. If you did it backwards you would have gotten 2-12 = -10, then 7-5 = 2 and divide -10/2 = -5, which is not correct.

P(-1, 4) Q(5,-5)
change in y over change in x
y's 4- -5 = 9
x's -1-5 = -6
divide 9/-6 = -3/2

slope = (y1-y2)/(x1-x2)

For your first problem, x1=5, y1=2, x2=7, y2=12
Slope = (2-12)/(5-7) = -10/-2 = 5

For your second problem, x1=-1, y1=4, x2=5, y2=-5
Slope = (4-(-5))/(-1-5) = 9/-6 = -3/2

Just remember, points such as A, B, P,Q are set up in the format (x,y). So the change or difference in the two y values divided by the difference or change in the two x values gives you the slope...or in layman's terms...how steep your line is and if you are going "up the hill" or "down the hill" depending on if your slope is a positive or negative number.

Good luck!

Slope m = 12-2/7-5 = 10/2 =5

FOR SECOND ONE M= -5 -4/5 - (-1) = - 9/6 = - 3/2

1) To go from x=5 to x=7; goes up from x=2 to x=12 -->

m= h/g = 10/2 =5

2) m= (-5-4)/(5-(-1)) = -9/6 = -3/2 Goes down.

Saludos.

Subtract the two Y positions = change in Y
Subtract the two X positions = change in X

Change in Y divided by change in X = slope
