I think the term you are referring to is "doppelgänger," also known as one's "Fetch," which refers to a ghostly double or other apparition. The origin of the word is German: Doppel (double) and Gänger (walker). The word can be used in connection with the idea of one's evil twin, but it can also refer to that sensation of seeing yourself in your peripheral vision (out of the corner of the eye), and in this case it is usually considered a sign of bad luck. In some traditions, a doppelgänger seen by a person's friends or relatives fortells illness or danger, while seeing one's own doppelgänger is an omen of death. In Norse mythology, a vardøgr is a ghostly double who precedes a living person and is seen performing their actions in advance.
In legend, one would know a doppelgänger from the real person because they don't cast a shadow and have no reflection. They were thought to "haunt" those who see them, planting misleading information and trapping the victim. In many cases, once someone has viewed his own doppelgänger, he is doomed to be haunted by images of his ghostly counterpart.
I hope that helps!

I have seen and met my doppleganger and came away fine. So did she. It was quite an experience. My voice was not that high (heard it later on the answering machine) but it was fun to make all the other comparisons.

It's called a doppleganger. Doppleganger originated in Germany meaning "double walker," or "ghostly double" of a living person.
