I was walking by the beck today when I saw a small gang of ducks nibbling at a pullover that had fallen into the water. Were they literally eating it, or could there have been some other readson it interested them?

They will try eating anything,,,they are stupid,,,I used to live on a narrowboat for some time and you could throw a hammer into the water and they would try that,,,but they love grass cuttings as do swans

Did you check whether the previous owner of that pullover was floating half-submerged in it and that was what they were nibbling?

If not it is just duck stupidity. I have seen ducks eating poo-covered floating corn kernels while paddling in a settling tank at a waste water treatment plant while the tank's water had an unbelievably bad sewage smell.

The Happy Murcia is right, they will try anything. You've heard of different animals eating all type of weird stuff. plastic bags etc. unfortunately it's not good for them and people should be more careful where they dispose of their waste.

I dont think they'll eat it but nibble if it tastes like water plants.

Perhaps they were eating insects stuck on the unwashed, dirty pullover. they are not all that stupid like human beings who try to dive from 100 ft like that idiot who nearly killed himself!
