lets face it today the order is:
1USA
2China
3India
4Japan
5Pakistan
In less then 10 years
1India
2China
3Pakistan
4USA
5Japan
but right now we still have the military to lean on, and an average industrialized nation economy, but that won't last long because no one in America wants to pay taxes to help make this country better.
I notice that none of the answers above me even mention India, yet they are the largest producer of computer software in the world, not to mentions a large portion of out sourced phone jobs have gone to India as well to help there economy and there army is full of Singh's some of the scariest men in the world, I served with on in Iraq.

I disagree with a lot of your statements. Ill stick to the question though.
Militarily:
1. USA (neutron bomb, tech advantages)
2. China (neutron bomb as of 1998 - and some say Clinton administration - and HUGE infantry potential.)
3. Russia - still have nukes and big army, although its mostly rust.
4. Gets harder to say here, Ill say Germany #4 others may disagree.
5. England.
Economic:
1. USA
2. Japan
3. Germany
4. China
5. UK
However, its not that simple. You have to consider that if for example a western nation attacked Pakistan which is muslim, not only is Pakistan nuclear, but also other muslim countries might come to its aid. Saudi Arabia may not have the highest GDP in the world but can seriously hurt your war effort if they cut you off.

You state that the United States doesn't deserve to be one, why? No other country in the world has the capital, the resources, or the drive to do something of the United States. We are simply the most powerful nation in the world. My next four would be China, Russia, Israel, and Saudi Arabia.

USA will always top every other country whether you want it or not.
You don't agree? I suggest you go and live in one of those countries like Russia for a year or so. When you come back to the USA you will change your original opinion.

I love this country, and you are entitled to your opinion but you do not know of what you speak when you speak with such disdain about this great country
1. China
2. Japan, no military but has the USA covering it's back with china
3. Germany, it too also has USA and NATO helping it's troops
4. UK
5. North Kora, no economy but great military power

God help us if ever China or Russia become the dominant global power. The US would look like a walk in the park compared to these misfits.

Well, I guess in terms of economy and military power, I'd have to say:
China
Russia
India
UK
Japan
But if we were talking about economy alone, my list would have other countries european countries as well, it would be very different form this on. Other countries would also enter if I was considering military alone...

Actually, it will almost be a *relief* for someone else to become the preeminent nation in the world besides the United States for a change.
Why, you might ask?
Because then all the unhappy people can whine at *someone else* for a change.
