Im heading back to college soon and getting ready to dorm shop. Last year I learned that half the stuff freshman buy is useless and overpriced and that the stuff retailers push as college gear is a joke. So I am humbly seeking the yahoo answers community for your ideas of great college and dorm gear. My best college buy is a thermos and a pair of rollerblades, every college student should have these. Thanks.

Since I don't know any college students who use rollerblades and I've never seen one with a thermos, it might be hard for people to come up with things which meet your specifications for usefulness!

Always check with your dorm to see what they allow. As a former RA (Resident Assistant) I used to get so mad at the retailers who would put out lists for freshman to buy for their dorm. Most of these so called "essentials" were not allowed in the dorm that I worked in and I would have to confiscate all this stuff during the first Health and Safety check during the first month of school. In many conventional residence halls things like toaster ovens, hot plates, foreman grills, coffee pots, toasters, candles and tapestries (hung on the walls or on the ceiling) were considered fire hazards (by the fire marshall) and were not allowed in the rooms. When I would tell the residents this, they would get mad and said that they were on the list that was given out by a specific retailer and why were they not allowed by the school? Always check with your residence hall. I know my college would give out a list.

Some things that are needed and allowed by most residence halls are: dorm sized fridge, microwave, desk lamp, bedding (for twinxl beds), pillows, small t.v., computer, printer, bathroom cleaning supplies (if you do not have a community bathroom) and some basic kitchen utensils (cups, mugs, silverware, bowls, plates).

Good Luck!

pencils, notebooks, bedding, lamp, been bag or stool, back pack, shower stuff and a shower caddy, Flip flops to shower in if you have community showers in your dorm, quarters for laundry, laundry soap, laundry bag or basket, Some crates to store stuff, or some plastic tubs that fit under your bed to store stuff, CD player/radio, laptop, favorite snack foods, mini dorm fridge, microwave, some pictures and picture frames to decorate your dorm with, and a decorative rug to put on the floors if no carpet.

-Pencils for underlining in textbooks so you can erase the marks and get more money when you sell them back.
-Comfortable pajamas you can wear to class.
-A cookie sheet. The person who makes cookies is always everyone's best friend.
-Bottle openers...
-Comfortable places for people to sit in your room (futon, beanbags, big pillows...)
And I agree about the thermos.
