No, the computer says that there is a problem and it will not turn off the light until it is fixed.
The Mass Air Flow Sensor is most likely contaminated or the wiring is bad and is giving bad readings to the computer.Since you had the intake gasket replaced , there is an vacuum leak somewhere.
Note: an engine misfire can also trip this code, but there would be a misfire code too.
Any shop that says that the light will go away just doesn't want to deal with it or has not properly diagnosed it.

They were half right. If there are no problems, the light will go off in about 40 start ups from a cold engine.
You have a problem that must be checked out. May have other codes.
Did you go to a high quality shop? Or did you look for the cheapest?
No your car will not get better if you keep driving.

First of all, you should not have accepted the car with the check engine light on. If the trouble was fixed, then they should have cleared the light.
Take it back immediately and get it right. They may have messed up the MAF sensor and don't want to admit it.
Don't let them get away with this.
Ask to speak to the service manager and explain things to him, if he doesn't give you satisfaction, then ask to speak to the regional customer service manager. If you can't do that, then call the 1-800 number in the owners manual and let Detroit know what's going on. Then Detroit will have a few words with the dealer. Good luck.

If the mass air sensor is bad it isnt going to fix itself. Until the problem is fixed and the code is cleared the check engine light will stay on

Take it back. No competent mechanic should have returned a vehicle to you with a check engine light on.

yeah, totally take it back. they probably screwed up ur sensor while installing ur gasket. it isnt just throwing a code. it sounds like the mafs is actually messed up (if only that) that problem isnt going to go away.

This problem is not going to resolve itself in time. Although, I would not recommend taking it back to the same mechanic you dealt with in the first place.
