They are there for protection against predators and for battling other guy sheep for the fairest maiden among the herd of sheep.

Why not? What a great thing to have... beat up the other guys (can't if you don't have them). Impress the girls. Dig stuff up if you need it. Swing them around & be cool. You're hot stuff with horns.
