I have a Christmas Cactus that my Mother-in-Law gave me 5 or 6 years ago that I think needs to be repotted.

It looks like it is packed in some kind of moss (either that or the soil is very well decomposed), and there are huge gaps between the side of the pot and the rootball.

My question is, how do I repot it safely? What potting mixture do I use? what is the best kind of pot to use (currently in a plastic nursery pot)? when is the best time of year to repot?

If it matters, I live in Milwaukee, WI (though this is strictly an indoor plant).

Thanks for your advice.

Hi!

I live in Michigan and have two of those. The gap in the pot is telling you that the soil is dry/dried up. Use a good cactus mix found at your local hardware store. Miracle grow has a "cactus/citrus tree" mix that works fantastic and it is currently what mine are in. As for the pot, a clay pot will work best because it will allow access moisture to escape the pot easier than plastic which doesnt breath. As I am sure you already know, they do not like wet feet...Anytime is fine to repot since it is a house plant. Happy planting :-)

unpot the chrismas cactus , then soak the roots in water till there isn't anymore earth, then pour some insecticide in a bowl with water added too, leave it in for ten minutes making sure the insecticide kills all the diseases, then get a larger pot and wash it with soap to disinffect the diseases and then rinse the pot and let it dry, then buy some fresh soil and repot it in the pot and then add water with insecticide to make sure the bacteria got out of it. I hope this helps! Good Luck!

They do have cactus potting mixture in the home gardening stores. Also purchase a clay pot. And if you have rocks put a layer of rocks and a drainage hole in the pot in which you will replant the cactus. Otherwise follow the instructions on the Miracle growth cactus soil. Good luck.

Christmas cactus likes it's roots to be pot bound. It blooms better that way. If you want to put it into another pot, only go up in size about an inch bigger. Anytime after it's done blooming is a good time to do it.
