What type of breed is this dog?

OK, I don't have a picture, but what type of breed was the 1960's cartoon Underdog modeled after? Please he;p me out!!!

I believe it's supposed to be a beagle. Snoopy in the Peanuts cartoon was a beagle, too. And, aside from the different way they're drawn, they do have the same coloration, droopy ears, etc.
