However, it now appears that 2005 was slightly hotter than 1998 (and 2007 will be hotter than 2005). If you're thinking about 1934, it was not even a warm year (as you can see in the graph linked above). See this question for an explanation as to why people who say 1934 was the hottest year are incorrect:

It was based on NASA data.
However, after revisions to their data due to a miscalculation, NASA now holds that the hottest year was 1934. Furthermore, they found that 4 of the 10 hottest years were in the 1930's.
Edit: BlueRidge, it was pretty relevant when it was thought to be 1998, right? I heard that factoid from Global Warming alarmists repeatedly. Apparently they thought that it bore some relevance, at least when it seemed to support their case.

Red herring.
Completely irrelevant whether the "hottest year" was 1998 or 1934.
It is becoming ever clearer to me that our society is wholly incapable of understanding issues, processing data, researching facts.
ONLY THE SENSASIONALISTIC HEADLINES get their attention.

just a guess here, but perhaps: Data....
I would think it comes from a compilation of Average Global Temp, and/or Sea Surface Temp measurements.

This was on NASS's GISS site. They put this data out before they found a flaw with their calculation.

There is no SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE that the THEORY OF GLOBAL WARMING is man made.
Look up global cooling in wikipedia.
