It isn't nearly as important as being able to write a complete sentence or question. ;)
Seriously, though, it saddens me when I see how relatively few native English-speaking people on the web, much less in real life, are able to write complete, coherent, intelligent, correctly spelled thoughts in their blogs, messages, questions, etc.
Although I am sure that the underfunded, politically-correct, educational system is partially at fault (I had great English teachers throughout my scholastic years), the primary blame is squarely on the students and their parents.
As an employer, given the choice between two equally qualified people, I'll choose the more erudite one.
If you're fortunate enough to get caring teachers who correct your work, then you will be perceived as a more intelligent person, over someone who can't even spell their own name (don't laugh; I know plenty of intelligent, literate people who cannot spell to save their lives; similarly, I have seen websites where people use "text messaging" as a writing style, only to have their meaning lost, because it confuses even those proficient in text messaging!).
A good education is important.
Proper English is important.

Communication is extremly important, especially since you use it in everyday life. And just because you DO use it in everyday life, dosen't mean that you should think that you don't need it, because it will help you be more confident so that you can get that first job or have the confidence to talk to that girl/guy etc.
