By hitting it with a hammer it can break the magnets an the end of the starter. It's the end where where the brushes are where you tap? Check an see that you put the ground cables on as they fall behind the battery.Check an see if there is voltage at the solenoid is there a neutral safety switch & is it in neutral??Was it starting before you changed the battery if yes than it's something you did or left off> If no than there isn;t enought space on this site to walk you threw all the checks.

You have a lose wire somewhere. I would first try looking for the ground between the battery and the engine. If that doesn't do the trick then start tracing the wires on the positive side. I had the same thing happen to me and a small grounding strap that went for the battery's case to the wiring block had fallen to a place where I could not see it. 3 hours of tracing for a 30 second fix.

I had the same problem with my Force 40hp motor there was a ground wire attached to the motor along with about 6 other ground wires i had to jiggle it around and out popped the loose one, i resolder it with a new connector and away i went.

I had a similar situation with mine, after many hours, I found that it was the ground wire. Check it. If you don't have a good ground, the boat won't start. Good luck.
