It's a bright color that's easy to see. If you're a guard, you don't really want the inmates camoflaged.

Because nobody else does. This way, if you see someone wearing an orange jumpsuit, you know that that person is in jail, escaping from jail or has been taken from jail.
You're not supposed to leave jail with the orange jumpsuit.

With one exception. It seems that orange jumpsuits are in vogue around Iraq. I've seen on video two men that were kidnapped by muslim extremist groups and beheaded, and both wore orange jumpsuits.

Visibility. Like the signs near prisons "don't pick up hitch hikers." Maybe it'd be easier to identify someone headed through town in an orange jumpsuit and pink flip-flops as a possible escapee?

easier to tell the difference between a inmate and a guard. they also stand out more if they escape

They don't always -- some jails have them in blue jumpsuits or other colors, and some prisons have standard uniforms of jeans. I think it's just supposed to stand out from everyone else.

It stands out and so they are easy to located.

They used to be white with horizontal black stripes but I think it became a style.

So that when and if they escape they are able to see them more easily. Same with Black and white striped shirts. Do you see people wearing black and white striped pants socks and shirt running around in public? haha.

So they can be seen easily if they escape. Not all prisons use orange though.
