There are times when it really supports the play, but that is not very common. One has to be really aware of how an audience will react to it.

As long as the audience is prepared for it and the play is reasonably mature about the nudity, I have no problem with it. I have been ALMOST nude on stage, (tiny flesh colored underwear), and I managed it ok as long as I didn't look at the audience. ;-)
Also, with the VERY bright, very HOT stage lights, certain "parts" tended to show through, so I might as well not have bothered with the bra and panties.
The main problem with being totally nude on stage is you have to act twice as hard to overcome the distraction. Losing the costume loses part of your characterization in the minds of the audience. But if you can manage to maintain that character in spite of it, it can make for a magnificent performance. Therefore, if you actually are any good, it give you a chance to really use your talent. terribly grown up

I think nudity on stage destroys the suspension of disbelief that is supposed to exist. You no longer think about what the "characters" are feeling or follow the plot, you just think, wow they are naked, I hope it's not too cold... are they just pretending under the covers, that seems awfully realistic? Are they doing this because they think it's really important or just pressured because they need this role/money. And once that is done you can't get it back. The rest of the play is ruined. I think if the play is written well enough that there should not be any call for nudity.

Generally I think it's fine. So long as the audience knows before attending the play/dance that there will be nudity then no-one who objects should be there, so what's the problem?
Why should public nudity be confined to tacky porn?
The only negative thing I can think of is if the artists are pressured into doing it by the company they work for, or because they don't have an abundance of other work........

I like it, especially if it's a dull play because it may keep me awake, especially if the actors are good looking babes! Dudes with their weenies hanging out? Uhh..forget it? I've long thought that the best way to get teenagers interested in Shakespeare was to have all the women appear in the nude and to have bodies like Scarlett Johannson! Just my most humble and ancient opinion you understand. To be nude or not to be nude...that is the question!

It's no different than nudity on-screen. It's fine if the play calls for it.

I don't have a problem with nudity in general but on stage I think it is weird and unnecessary.

It depends on what stage of the arts you are in. Usually not necessary to perform nude. For some it works.

I'm not sure how necessary nudity is on stage unless you're at a strip joint. Then it's just gratuitous.

Turnabout is fair play. The audience should be nude, too.
