I would also have to say things on their registry, parents make those things for a reason! Most of the time they pick out things they need and can't afford to get themselves. Go in on an expensive one with a friend or two, that will cut the cost :)
I would avoid getting baby medications tho, (like Tylenol). Some parents won't use them bcuz of the risks and side effects. Diapers are also nice, seems you never have enough of those!! But you may also want to ask whether they will be using cloth or disposable and be sure to get the right size! My babies r big when they're born, so they rarely wear newborn size for more than a week! Other good things are the gift packages. Whether with bath essentials, clothes, or whatever. I always liked getting a bunch of different lil things :) Good Luck

When I had my son, I spent a lot of time picking things out for my registry. Try getting something off of their registry. I'm sure they would appreciate it. If you want to get something more unique, maybe something personalized like a receiving blanket with their name embroidered on it. Or even ask the mother if there is anything they REALLY need. I had plenty of friends asking what I especially wanted off of my list, that was I was sure to get something I needed. I would avoid a lot of clothing as that seems to be what most people get, or at least avoid buying a lot of them haha. My son literally could wear one outfit every day until he grew out of that size and never wore an outfit twice. The one thing I found was helpful was diapers, wipes, formula, etc. The things they will need most often. I am constantly running out. You can never have enough of that! If you know a group of people going to the shower, maybe go together and get one of the bigger items like the crib, swing, or high chair.
Also, I have to add this because I work there haha... I'm sure I put it in just about every post on the parenting section... Check out www.babyage.com for some good deals. :o) Best of luck!

Ever since I had my baby, I've been a little more thoughtful about these things. And I'm very grateful for everything I received at my shower, which was basically everything I needed. I try to get some diapers and wipes, which are always appreciated, some items off the registry of the mom, and some items of my choosing, like little toys or a book for the child to enjoy later.

Diapers are always a great gift. If you choose to buy clothing try buying a larger size like 6-9 mo. or 12, 18 mo. People usually buy little clothes and when the baby gets older they have nothing. I like to buy one of the smaller diaper bags and fill it full of goodies like baby shampoo, wipes, lotion, cotton swabs, an outfit, and if its a girl I love to buy hairbows or if its a boy a small base ball cap (they look so cute).

when i attend a baby shower i like to give a diaper cake. it wows everyone and is very helpful for the parent. the most used thing for a baby. get about two packs of newborn diapers. roll them up individually and fasten with rubberband. stack on the side about five to seven prerooled diapers and fasten with another rubberband. keep doing this. then put them together and form a bottom layer of cake then middle then top. you can also roll up some washcloths and socks to make it look like flowers and add some bath stuff too.

Just some thoughts.....a baby album to record important events up to school age....or a nice photo album that the parents could keep baby pictures in.
How about including an up-to-date newspaper that the "baby" could open when she turns sixteen or eighteen....even a catalogue...she would get a kick out of the styles of 2007!

The best gift is something that no one else would think about giving but is something that is useful.
a basket for washing the bottle nipples in the dishwasher.
diaper pins and cloth diapers.
clothes for babies - that are bigger than newborn. Babies grow so fast and before you know it - you have no clothes.
pacificier retainer clip.
the DVD that shows new parents how to communicate with your baby from Dunstan

If the mother is planning to breastfeed the best gift you can give her is a breastfeeding support pillow like Boppy or Cuddle U. That will be her best friend!
Other great gift ideas are: diaper pale, bath tub full of soap, lotion, powder, etc. , wipe warmer, gift card to a children's clothing store, diapers, wipes, diaper bag full of goodies, bibs, children's clothes hangers...I could go on forever!
