Have you then noticed that the optimists are invariably conservatives and the pessimists liberals? Why is that?

Let's see...two kinds of people:
Those with all ten toes and those with less. Those with some hair and those totally bald. Those who are atheists and those who believe in some form of higher power. Those who love NASCAR and those who don't. Those who have climbed Mt. Everest and those who have not. Those who are drunk and those who are sober. Those on the placebo and those on the real drug. Seems to me it's pretty easy to divide people into categories when researching a trend.

I had a relatively miserable job for a long time. During that time someone saw me smiling. (top brass in another department) He sent a large potted plant to me with his compliments and his secretary delivered it. She told me what he said and she quipted... "You must be a avid optimist" I was startled at the comment and explained... No, I am just so scared tomorrow there will be less to smile about I am selfish and want to get my smile in today while I still can.
Can not always tell a book by the cover.
So you see I am a pessimist and a conservative too....

Maybe ther conservatives just know that no matter how bad things look there is always something to smile about... so they get labeled optimist by people who do not thoroughly search out truth... you know like the liberals who either do not want to bother searching for true facts or are just too upset about the fact that there is ANOTHER side to every issue !

You're an idiot if you believe all people can be separated by 1 line.

EDIT - You are saying that any optimistic person is a conservative. I'm optimistic and I couldn't be any further from conservative. I'm assuming you're a Con, therefore assuming libs, the opposite of con, are also the opposite when it comes pessimism and optimism.

Many Cons do this. They only see the world as black or white. No in between. If you're against the war you're instantly labeled as a traitor, unpatriotic and a communist......instead you should label these people as people with different opinions. Not all Libs see eye to eye on every issue. Cons on the other hand are party liners for the most part. As soon as somebody tells me they're a Conservative or Republican.....I can usually guess with 90% accuracy what their views are on almost every issue. So for people like you, I can see why you only see the world in black on white, it's because you and you right wing associates do not think for yourselves. You all share the same party line BS opinion. In other words, you know nothing.

I'll be optimistic when Hillaty moves into the White House - with Americans and the world in general, too, appear more united as in the days of President Clinton. The Bushies have a trademark of not only influencing chaos and division in the Middle East, but also here within America. And that is immorally and unethically bad.

Four kinds, actually:
1) Pessimists, who see the glass as half empty;
2) Optimists, who see the glass as half full;
3) Realists (or analysts), who see that the level of water (or whatever) in the glass is roughly near the middle;
4) and Politicians, who tell everyone the glass is half empty when it's not and they're the ones drinking all the water (or whatever) anyway.

I tend to fall in the third category.

Don't agree with the conservative/liberal stuff, however their is an element of denial that goes along with being a pessimest, when it comes to their own dealings. And an optomist can arrive at a pessimistic reasoning given enough evidence. Also their is some wisdom optomists can gleam from a pessimist, (I am optomist married to P) cause we do miss observe thru our rose colored glasses, fine details more readily deduced by a pessimist.

Because the definition of liberal is that you want to move forward, progress, and change for the better. The definition of conservative is that you want to stay the same, status quo, and keep tradition. So if you are optimistic, you probably think everything is fine, and doesn't need to change. If you are pessimistic, you probably are constantly finding ways to improve.

actually there are three types of people ...at least in the opinion of this writer...

First let me tell you about the type of people who care about nothing but themselves. All they care about is the way that they feel, or what they look like. These people are selfish little nerds. They don’t give a hoot about anyone else. All they ask is, "Hey, how’s my hair?" Or they tell me all about how many points they scored the other night, or who they took out on a date. All I ever hear from them is "Brag, brag, brag." I’m really getting sick of it.

Now let me tell you about a person that is totally opposite of the self-centered person. They are known as caring people. Their goal in life is to make other people happy. These people are the kind of characters that love to give others a helpful hand. These are the kinds of friends that others can trust and talk to about anything that is on their minds. They’re there to lift up others when they are down, not to push them down even further. When they are helping others with problems, they may be making themselves feel better, but they never reach the point of shining the spotlight on themselves. The glory goes back into the work they do, or they give the glory to God, because he is the one who truly cares about every single person.

"What’s up? Hey I’m two-faced, so if you don’t like that, then just ignore me." Wouldn’t it be easier if every two-faced person told people that they were back stabbers before everything goes to the trash can? It would save those who aren’t two-faced a lot of time. There wouldn’t be any problems with talking behind backs and spreading rumors. Things would be a lot simpler if two-faced people would just decide who they like, and who they hate.

Nobody wants to hang around people that are two-faced or people who care about nothing but themselves. People want friends who care about who they are, and what they like. It is fairly simple to figure out: if a person is self-centered, then just let them be that way. Don’t be their friend because they don’t care about others. Say a friend is backstabbing -- don’t hang out with them. Let them figure out what just happened to their relationship with you. Instead, find a friend who cares not about him or herself, but other people’s feelings. Also, start caring for friends that need help, and then they will also take the hint.

Here is what I, Lord Sesshomaru, have discovered about Humans: "Optimists" see the glass as "Half-FULL"; "Pessimists see the glass as "Half-EMPTY"... I Myself see the glass as a potential weapon that may be broken and thrust into My throat. THAT is one of the reasons that we Demons have such a long lifespan, compared to the Humans.
