If I got all of my information from TV or the internet maybe I would agree. If I did not read, have an education and have a sense of history I might agree.
If I had not spent my whole life working and fighting in other countries..... seeing people w. no running water, electricity or food I might still. If I had not witnessed in person countries where they can toss you into jail for no reason, take away all that you own, shoot your family, shoot you, chop your hands off...... I keep it simple and not digusting since it is Answers.
Look around you as I assume you live in the US. A grocery store is nearby having 99% more than the rest of the planet. You have a computer, electricity and heat or air conditioning. If someone was breaking down your door the police would be there in 3 minutes. The same would apply if you had a fire. If someone leveled a charge against you you would have your day in court...... not a bunch of people who have prejudged you. In America even if they did you could fight it.
Point is that yes, governments are not perfect. But instead of being angry sit for a moment and appreciate what you have. There are a lot of people who make it so. Not perfect by any means but still it could be much worse.

At this point I am grateful for the governments benefits, which I worked very hard to accrue.Since I have been ill, that's been a good thing for me. I do believe that a central government is necessary in order to handle the affairs of large numbers of people. However, it's tragic that most often power hungry crooks, sociopaths, and charlatans end up in charge. In effect, the foxes are "protecting" the chickens. I do have a voice and a vote, which I use, but they only go so far. And that is frustrating!

No I would not agree--a governing body is essential.
Yes our current government has worn out their welcome!
Government is necessary but it is time for a huge change. The way things have been going is no longer working. Government is controlled by special interest groups, large corporations and rich people. All the politicians are bought and therefore owe the people who bought them special favors. I don't know what needs to be done, I don't have a plan, but something deffinitely needs to change. I often wonder if there's going to be another revolution because of all the corruption in government.

No. I don't agree with that. I am not an anarchists, an I feel government is a necessary "evil." We all know the saying, "power corrupts," but it is our duty to keep that power in check. Unfortunately, most of us do not do "our part" in that responsibility. Without government, we would have no roads, no infrastructure, and no protection. Pollution, violence, and greed would be even more out of control than it is now. People without wealth or power would be enslaved by others and no one would be there to free them. There would be no justice. I wouldn't want to live in a land without government. I just wish we could find a good balance of power.

in your additional detalis you said there would still be laws and police. Without a government you can have no such public services. If you did have police and laws without levels of government above them to establish rules, then they would in effect become the government and become responsible for making and enforcing the laws. So you have in effect traded a democracy for a totalitarian government. I dont see how you came out ahead. without a government you have anarchy. In an anarchy might makes right. Do you think you are really able to function in such a society? The average human being would just be prey for the persons with the basest instincts.

Read Hobbes (Government is necessary to protect its citizens from bodily harm-- the "state of nature")
or
Locke (Goverment is the manifestation of the social contract of its citizens to act in a certain way).
How has government affected my life?
I get up in the morning from a bed that I know has not been used before and isn't filled with lice because of government regulation.
I take a pill I know is safe because it's been reviewed by the FDA to ensure that it does what the makers say it does and that it won't kill me.
I check my e-mail on the Internet, which started as a government communications network and was largely built with public subsidies. I use a computer, which contains dozens of patents, protected by the government from people infringing and stealing others' ideas, which encourages innovation through commercial development of technology.
I take a shower with water coming from a safe, clean public water supply (some of the best in the world). Cost to me? $.02 per gallon.
I ride to work on streets created and maintained by the government, with trash recepticles emptied by government workers. I don't worry about getting mugged or killed on the way because there is a government-sponsored police force to protect us and generally deter crime.
I come into my office at a reasonable time and work in a comfortable place because of basic governmental regulations about health hazards, work conditions, and discrimination in the workplace.
I call my grandmother. My call goes through because everyone is not trying to use the same wireless frequency (thanks to government regulation). She is doing well, thanks in part to medicare health insurance and her social security income, which supplements her retirement (and keeps millions of ederly out of poverty).
Need I go on? Government DOES affect our lives for the good. It is not only necessary but beneficial. And on top of all of that we as a society LOOK to government to solve problems. Our children aren't getting educated -- what should the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT do about it? A disaster hits a large city -- how should the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT respond (or how should have it warned the citizens beforehand). People are importing toxic products-- what should the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT do to stop it? So, the government is (a) necessary, (b) desirable, and (c) only responding to its citizens' claims to do more.
(What? There would be laws and police but no president or Congress? Who would make the laws? Who would change them if times changed? Who would the police report to? Who would RAISE MONEY to pay for the police? Who would TRY the criminals? Would you still have courts? Who would pay for the courts? Who would raise the money to pay for the courts? I mean, there's an argument for anarchy, but now your suggestion is just silly.)

ERMMM maybeeeee by putting rules and regulations on society and not allowing people to run wild - if it wasnt for laws and prisons then there wud still be many more murderes, serial killers, child moelesters and peado's out there! Humans need rules and regulations and a leader ship to enforce these so that we can effectivly control our social structure. if it wasnt for a government, then we would live in complete anarchy and everyones lives would be even more hellish then it already is. Although i do agree the government does interfer wayy too much and does a lot of harm too peoples lives but the harm doesnt outway the good - i hope lol it differently needs a change!
obviously there are a lot mroe reasons but that is the most obvious one i can think of...

Yeah,
I live in the most wealthy nation in the entire world and I am given every oppurtunity to make something of myself because the government defends the freedom of the economy and defends my freedom. The world would be in chaos without government look at New Orleans after Katrina when their were no cops around, it was mass choas, stealing and rapes. The government is always necessary but like Jefferson said the government needs to be made of aware that its existence is to serve the people and that we created the government.

Government is necessary, they just have their priorities way wrong.
Example, they break up Microsoft and Bill Gates because they don't want him to have a monopoly. (Gates also donates billions of dollars a years) The Government however will not do anything with the oil companies and their monopolies. They also won't force them to run production to keep up with demand.
I'm not even going to start how the Government requires insurance but does nothing to control it. Insurance is the biggest scam in America, and I'm talking about ALL forms of insurance, health, vehicle, home owners, flood all of them are a big scam.
The Government needs to re-focus on taking care of the people, not just themselves.

So you are talking about a system in which there is no governement? Interesting. Since there would be no government, there would be no police. There would be no laws. We could kill or be killed with impunity. There would be no public buildings, no roads, no education. Nope, not liking the sound of this at all.
I wonder why you asked this and didn't provide your own opinions.
