Isn't fear the true enemy of freedom?

2007-08-14 06:45:18 · 17 answers · asked by Chi Guy 5 in Politics & Government Politics

For pistol packing, macho talking, "patriots", neo-cons sure know how to spread fear and anxiety like nobody's business...

"Be afraid. Be very afraid. THEY WANT TO KILL YOU!"

Over and over again... Am I wrong?

Yes and that goes for liberals and conservatives. But the terrorists are at least real, the human impact on global warming is a myth.

Hope you don't mind a copy/paste, I wrote this in (a very long) respose to a question asking if we had 'Two Americas", and this part was specifically about fear...

Then we have 9/11, followed by a time of unity. Angry and defiant, but unified and unafraid. Bush carried that unity forward when he said in the State of the Union, "you're either with us, or with the terrorists". But wait, that was unifying only on the surface. The other message, the one beneath the surface, was a message of divisiveness. A message that said there is no middle ground, there is no room for critical thought and no room to criticise the government's actions. The ones who would do so, must be with the terrorists, they must be un-American, they must hate their country. See how unifying that is?

What happened to the voices that said "they didn't win, we're not afraid!" so bravely? They were silenced by an agenda of fear. We heard "If we don't fight them there, they'll follow us home", said against the backdrop of a mushroom cloud... when there was no "yellow-cake" and no nukes, except our own depleted uranium. Here, take my civil liberties... I won't need 'probable cause' or 'due process of law' if I'm not doing anything wrong. Right??Executive Privilege doesn't follow that same premise though, it's 'different' and 'necessary' for so much more than classified information. Right??

OK there is nothing to be afraid of right?
Just a bunch of hysteria right?
All made up to keep corrupt politicians in office right?

I've asked this question before and now I'll ask it of you:

Nothing to fear but fear so we should do away with those security lines at the airport. Won't that be convenient?
Would you get on a plane with me to Heathrow full of Pakistani, Saudi and Jordanian nationals that have not gone through security? After all, there is nothing to fear but fear right? Have a seat, enjoy the peanuts, just relax.
I'm all for it, no more reason to be at the airport 2 hours early.
All this nervousness was created by Dick Cheney because Haliburton sells metal detectors or something, RIGHT?
Come fly with me baby.

You mean fear as in the leftists' fearmongering about:
Bush is polluting the country?
Bush is stealing our rights and freedoms?
Bush is trampling on the Constitution?
War for Oil?
Global Warming?
NAU?
etc?

We have a healthy and natural fear of an enemy that has attacked us and caused us great harm.

You people have monster-in-the-closet type fears - imaginary bugbears.

That is an amazing idea since the democrats have run their election campaigns for years on a "fear theory" that the republicans were going to take away social security, medicaid, the tides and the moon.

Their tactic as beautifully stated by one of their idols:

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

That quote - from FDR - was about the Great Depression. His assertion was that the economy was only as bad as it was because people were afraid it would continue to be bad. He was wrong, there were fundamental reasons for the economic downturn.
