What do you mean that rap used to mean something? If rap sucked explain why people are buying all of the albums they're making, answer that question. The only reason rappers have all of the cars, the rims, the houses, and all the money is because they don't suck and they're making money off of the things they rap about because people like it. In rap, people are expressing themselves by saying what they like. For example in Lil' Mama's song Lip Gloss she talks about how she likes to wear lip gloss and how people like all the flavors she has. That's not stupid that's her just saying what she likes. Younger people mostly like rap because it's about things that they care about. Plus you can't forget that they also have to think about audience and how they have to be impressed or else the rapper will be dropped from the record company. In rock the band are also expressing what they like or feel just in a different way. Honestly, if you think rap sucks I'd like to see all those people who think it sucks come up with a rap or freestyle and try to make it a big hit. Impress the audience, I'd like to see you try.

All types of music is getting worse. Think about it, it all started with motown then from there came The Beatles in the 60's, Led Zepplin in the 70's, Guns N Roses in the 80's, and then in the 90's things started going downhill for music.
Grunge and Punk started to take over mainstream music with bands like Nirvanna, Blink 182, Green Day, Pearl Jam... Now, in the 2000's, we have rap, alternative rock, and emo music as our mainstream music. The bands, in my opinion, that our keeping music alive our bands like Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet For My Valentine, Velvet Revolver, and Audioslave. Theres alot more but i figure those are the main ones. But thats just my opinion.
And to answer your question, rap has always sucked.

There are still talented rappers today. sadly, the recording studios and radio stations won't give them that big push onto the mainstream. Instead, you have to hear this commercialized bullshit about bitches, hoes, killing police officers, and bling-bling. To find good rap today, you must go mainstream. Otherwise, you can do what I do and just sit back and listen to the old-school artists. I listen to anything pre-1995.

I couldn't agree more. The rap carries no melody line in the beat. It is the same chord throught the whole freakn song, with lame lyrics and the same crappy beat. Nothing touches the west coast rap from the 90's. Dr. Dre's Chronic and Chronic 2 album is where it's at. Same w/ Junior Mafia! That is some good rap.

You're looking in all the wrong places.
If you're interested in old school then pay attention to the likes of Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, The Roots, MF Doom, etc... they're keeping the whole Native Tongues vibe alive.
If you're looking for modern-day substance what about people like Sage Francis, Atmosphere, Eyedea, Sole, Cage... all kinds of dudes that are putting real emotion into their lyrics.

Your opinion of rap is just that - Opinion. Personally I love rap and although sometimes I think there are some rap artists who could be a little more creative or talk about something different, lets not forget that they are expressing themselves and despite the fact they must please the crowd to be successful, it's their music and their choice what they sing. I'm thinking if you don't like it, don't listen to it. For the most part, your the minority in your opinion otherwise these rap artists wouldn't be bathing in a bathtub bigger than your bedroom and wouldn't be driving brand new escalades they paid for with cash. Somebody's doing something right! ;-)

rap sucks because so many artists are forced by their labels to commercialize their lyrics. What I mean is, almost every song on the radio has the same topic, and their is no one that particularly stands out, because artists are no longer being themselves. But what the media wants them to be.
Also, for the people who say rap sucks. It doesn't suck its just not the same as your genre.

Nowadays you can rap about the silliest things and if it has a good hook, then the mindless sheep in mainstream culture will gravitate to it and make the talentless rapper an instant millionaire.

Yeah, it has gone a bit down hill. I'm not sure why they have turned to the ideology they have, but it has become almost impossible to listen to for me also. I used to love rap music, when rappers knew how to really rap.
I'd rather listen to the wind blow now.
