Control Panel > Power Options icon > Advanced tab
Look for the setting that says "When I close my lid..." and change it to what you want it to do (use the drop down listing)

I have a dell too. In addition to be able to change what happens when you close the laptop, you can completly switch monitors. Go to Start>Control Panel>(on the left click switch to classic view, if however it says switch to category view, do nothing)>Power Options>Advanced(tab)>change when I close portable lid to do nothing. You can also switch monitors complelty. I have a dell inspiron 4100 laptop on XP and use an external monitor and find that this works better. In contorl panel, click display>settings(tab)>advanced>display(t... the second monitor to primary(circle instead of two boxes>turn off the laptop screen Now, every time you turn on the laptop each time it will only use the 2nd screen, which is easier and quicker

Actually, there is no option to change settings for when the laptop lid is closed. The laptop will go to sleep... it does that to save the battery and to prevent the laptop from overheating and causing physical damage to the laptop... there laptop disperses a lot of heat through the top.
If you really want to allow this, you could use a pair of dikes and cut the little plastic switch off... (I am not responsible if you break your laptop)

Open up your start menu, go to "Control Panel" on the right hand side. Select "Power Options" and you can change what your computer will do when you close the lid, when you let it idle, and so on.
It should be in the "Advanced" options tab.

go into the control panel and click on an option labeled power settings. You should see where you are able to set the laptop to do nothing instead of hybernate if that is what you want it to do.

Its under power management... you need to change the settings.... Right click on the Desktop and select properties... Then select screensaver, and then look at the bottom where it says power.... look in there and you'll figure it out... :)
