I go to www.solarmonitor.org everyday to check out the sun and it says "SOHO EIT is in Bakeout "

what does that mean? What is bakeout??

What he said above... routine maintenance. They do it a few times a year, usually when the orbital attitude around the LaGrange point puts SOHO in a bad position for comm. and pointing.

But... it was my understanding that it was the CCD arrays that were baked out. They get hit with a constant stream of solar protons and neutrons that cause some physical damage to the crystal lattice. When the lattice is heated (baked), some of that damage is annealed and thus repaired to some extent.

"Bakeout" is a term used to describe the intentional off lining of the ultraviolet telescope on board SOHO. Nothing is wrong, just routine maintenance.
