I would suggest that you pick up a copy of the: 2007 GM Performance Parts Catalog from your Chevrolet dealer. For a measly $5.00 it's a steal. The part No. is 19170580. If they don't have it they'll order it. It's worth it's weight in gold.
If I 'm not mistaken you have a 5.3 liter motor in your truck. That motor has 323 cubic inches and unfortunately nothing is the same as compared to the old tried and true 327. Bore and stroke is different as well as block, cylinder heads, intake and exhaust manifold . Your's is a better motor anyway.
** Why don't you upgrade to a truck 6.0 liter- LQ4/LQ9 gas motor ? It's avalable new or remanufactured. The part # is 12491357. This baby carries a 36 month / or 100,000 mile warranty. It's a bolt in for the same year and model as yours. That way everything on the top will be a bolt on.

*There are many versions of the old 350's and 383 base and partial motors in this catalog. I don't now if you plan on switching to a carbuerator but you would need to if you're thinking about the old heads and blocks. The beauty of buying these motors direct from Chevrolet they have a 24,000 mile or 2 year full warranty. To my knowledge no one else has such an iron clad guaranty.
If you have the either the newest 25534421 or 25534431 Vortec cylinder heads for the old 350 (worth 35-40 hp. off the shelf) you could certainly get buy with one of the partial motors.

You need to understand the the engine in your 2001 Z71 is an LS1 type of engine and not interchangeable with the earlier 350 and 327 ci motors. everything is different from the exhaust system, intake systems and motor mounts. If you are wanting to put a crate motor in it, you should stay with the same LS1 type engine family.

The crate motor is the best way to go, warrenty is good you can shop online and find deals, ive installed many crate motors over the years and people have always been happier than any rebuilds ive seen, its so hard to find really good machine shops anymore, and the good ones deserve to charge alot more than the hacks, but it makes the cost of a stock rebuild as much as a crate or more.....

Stick with the 327 with the added twist of having it proffessionally blueprinted and finely balanced to insure what you have. This engine must be perfect to take on the slop in the rest of your drivetrain.
