Their is a book & website called "Addicted to War: Why the US Can't Kick Militarism" by Joel Andreas, which discusses this at length. It's easy to read and is actually in comic book form.
It's VERY liberal. Some of it is far too liberal for me but he makes some very good points and the historical facts can't be dismissed so easily (though I imagine some people would do so anyway.)
It all started with "Manifest Destiny" the belief that the white race had the right to conquer the continental USA, and hasn't stopped since.
According to this book, we've been colonizing the world one acre at a time since the beginning of the 19th Century.
Although it can be said to be liberal, it's not really about Republican/Democrat or Conservative/Liberal. It also doesn't hide the fact that Dems have waged war more often than the GOP.
One fact is indisputable: In our 200+ year history there has NEVER been a time when the USA didn't have military forces deployed somewhere in the world in some other nation. That's not to say we've ALWAYS been at war, but we've always had a military presence deployed.
What gives us the right to do that?

A lot of the European bases are due to our NATO commitments. The bases in Korea are because that war is still really going on there was never a peace treaty. Other countries we are allies of allow us to have bases there for their own security (Japan).

Because the U.S. is mighty and won wars in those countries.
Because our presidents think if we provide weapons that the recieving nation will be friendly to us.
Because when some people gain control of the most advanced army in the world, they want to play with it.

Why indeed? Power, money, unsavory partnerships, personal favors...the list is endless. But as long as the American people keep turning a blind eye and allowing it, they will continue to get the government they deserve. And they should also not take offense to those who criticize your government for those very acts...too often I see Americans criticizing people from other countries who are simply pointing out the realities of their governments illegal and immoral acts.

Sometimes the enemy of our enemy is our friend.
We get involved in some wars to make long term piece. If we did not get involved in WW2 everyone in Europe would be speaking German today, for example. Sometimes it is necessary to cut off the head of a snake before it gets too big.

It comes with being a superpower and protecting our interests around the world to maintain our position. Now that Russia has an economy about the size of Florida's do you think they are still a superpower?
