Paraskavedekatriaphobia is, apparently the fear of Friday the thirteenth.
Is it rational to exclude thirteen from so many numeric sequences?
For example there is no apartment 13 in our block.
Who agrees or disagrees with this phobia - and if ypu agree with what reason?
I am alone in thinking that this fear is a load of .....................!

The number thirteen has always been "lucky" for me in many ways.
I like prime numbers and would always take a free loaf!

I too think that it is silly to be afraid of Friday the 13th. Personally, I love the day, and it usually only happens twice a year. Here are some interesting things about the number thirteen: the Apollo 13 mission was launched at 1313 hours, insurance companies have 13 nature related disasters that they cover, Odysseus was the 13th of his group and the only one NOT killed by the Cyclops, and it is said that there are 13 stages of Buddhahood (10 bodhisattva and 3 pre-Buddhist. The number 13 is also significant in the Winchester Mansion, and in the Seal of the United States the number 13 appears 13 times. Most of why it is considered an unlucky number is because at the last supper when Judas sat at table with Jesus and the other apostles it made 13, hence don't sit 13 at a table. Friday the 13th got its stigma after the Catholic church decided that the Knights Templar were heretics, attacked them and stole all their religious relics. The attack happened on Friday the 13th. Philadelphia also had a Friday the 13th Club (with thirteen members) that would meet every Friday the 13th to prove that superstitions were just silly.

Actually, 13 is only considered unlucky because the Templar Knights were believed to be exterminated on Friday the 13th, if you believe such things. However there are some people who believe 13 is a lucky, look at it this way, there are 24 hours in a day, and at midnight when the clock hits 12, there is a slight temporal paradox when 12 is both yesterday and today, and yesterday is today and today is tomorrow. Following me? Put it this way if today was Tuesday then tonight at 12 o'clock a.m, there'll be a split second where it'll be both Tuesday and Wednesday, thus a 13th hour almost. Pretty cool huh? Try reading a book called the Midnighters by Scott Westerfield.

Hey, we have the same birthday!

I do not consider it rational to avoid the number 13 or any other number without reason. "Because its unlucky" doesn't help. Now some people like numerologists put great stock in numbers, so if they avoided a number I would call that "with reason", even though I'd probably disagree with that reason. But just avoiding it "because" is silly.

eh, i personally think that what is considered lucky or unlucky by the individual will be lucky or unlucky. Its all about perception. example. its Friday the thirteenth. you go to work. you are already predisposed to the assumption Friday the thirteenth is unlucky. as a result, you are moody, you stay away from people, and are generally antisocial and overcautious. as a result of that, you find yourself accentuating all the "unlucky" things that happened to you and go to bed believing your assumption is correct, therefore strengthening it. the same works in reverse, and this same scenario also works for everything you assume. hope this enlightens you ^-^ have a nice day

no. never had a problem with fri 13th. never will. but due to all the hipe, some people are expecting 'bad luck' or sh** to hit the fan, and if you look for something hard enough, you'll find it. anything however small going wrong, no matter how small that would normally not even be noticed will be put down to it being friday 13th.

I do not have such a phobia, I have other irrational fears to contend with

And for other thoughts on the matter . . .

Jean Cocteau:
Of course I believe in luck. How otherwise to explain the success of some people you detest?

Lucille Ball:
Luck? I don't know anything about luck. I've never banked on it, and I'm afraid of people who do. Luck to me is something else: Hard work -- and realizing what is opportunity and what isn't.

Ralph Waldo Emerson:
Shallow men believe in luck. Strong men believe in cause and effect.

Thomas Jefferson:
I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it.
