Spanish /is/ a European langauge, y'know. But, no, Americans won't need to learn Spanish (or any other language) merely to survive for some time. English is still the world's most-spoken second language, and that won't change anytime soon.

Todavia, no puede hablar Usted el Espanol? Pardon the lack of proper Spanish grammar and alphabet markings...don't know how to do upside down ? or ~ in Yahoo! Answers.
Bite the bullet and learn it. It's pretty easy. Afterword, try French, Italian, and German even. If you travel to Europe, you'll be much happier. If you have a Vodka-loving drinking buddy, learn a little Russian. And, It'll keep your brain cells strong. And, It's just plain fun to speak and read multiple languages. Spanish helps me to tell the yard and house staff what I need for them to do...and yes...they are legal. French helps me to communicate with our chef. French and German help when talking with my overseas bankers.
Besides, I may qualify for a job with the CIA as I get more proficient. Farsi next.
Hey, the US land mass could have been just as easily conquered more by Spain or France as it was by England, had European history unfolded differently.

If Americans will need to learn Spanish, I can only see one reason for that: Because it will be (if it will be) the official language-not in order to survive.

With the way things are spreading out over the globe it is a very good idea for everyone to have the ability to speak at lease two or more languages.
Especially if you plan on working with a company that has dealing outside of the USA. It will become necessary if you want to survive in the business world.
Folks in the USA are so much into themselves that they think the whole world is suppose to speak our language. Those days are gone, gone, gone.
We may still be one of the major super powers but in the business world we're fast becoming just part of the food chain.
I encourage all to look around and fine out what your going to have to know to make you self valuable on the job market.

Not at all. This country was settled by people from several different nations, primarily Europeans, that spoke different languages. Yet today, English is the default language, despite the fact that the majority of Americans are not descended from the English, but from the Germans. The immigrants are the ones who should learn English. This issue is complex, as it is one I cannot find clear U.S. political party affiliations to. I'm a staunch Democrat, but I still feel very, very strongly against illegal immigrants. One thing I take note of as an angry liberal is that this nation is not one to change quickly. Americans will not allow Mexicans to assimilate the nations as a whole, no matter how many their numbers are.

That's actually an interesting question.
I think Spanish will come in handy if you would like to work as a slave building Mosques and footbaths. However, in order to just survive, you will need to speak arabic so that you can claim to your captors that you are willing to convert to the peaceful religion of Islam that has just overtaken our country.
Of course, all of this is assuming Hillary wins in '08.

NO, but I think it's valuable to learn all types of languages; when other cultures come to this country they know on the average 3 to 4 different languages English being one of them. So to be able to keep up, and understand what is being said around you; it would be an asset for you to learn another language.

Well you already need to know your basic spanish to survive in south florida. More specifically, Miami Florida.
Hispanics are actually moving up the state, as most newspapers have stated.
Americans should know at least their basic Spanish.
I mean, the hispanics cut their lawn, they need to tell them how to do it.
Besides, most of the Americas speaks Spanish. From South America to Central America.
As for the future, once a hispanic becomes president of the USA, be prepared to a latino revolution.

Wow, What are you talking about? Your knowledge of history is shaky at best. In reality, you need to learn history to survive. Language doesn't really matter when you don't know anything about your country.
Now put out your right slab you bloody shmeg!
