A boat uses a HIN which stands for hull Identification number. Normally stamped on the right rear corner or in better terms the starboard corner of the stern. It is assigned at the factory just like the serial number on a car frame, a bike frame, an engine etc. It is a form of identification for that particular item. It is used to regester the vessel or whatever, and help identify it if it is stolen. Possession of an item with the serial number removed is a crime. Your question has many answers, hopefully, I covered the one you wanted.
