bills, etc. With the horror stories about how banks dispose of old documents (i.e, do not shred, but just put in the dumpster as is), it is pretty scary to me. But I am not quite ready to go totally electronic. Anybody else feel this way.

I have been paying all of my bills except my rent this way. I love it! I never forget to pay because as soon as my bill come in the mail I come straight to my computer and pay. No stamps. Good idea.

I won't go electronic until forced to. I don't like it that the real check is no longer kept. Also it is possible that someone could intercept the transaction, and change the value on the check. You won't have a real one to back you up anymore. And I won't do on line purchases. I do a few over the phone purchases, for convenience. But I use "snail mail" to pay the bills that I don't do in person.
I did read an article requiring all Americans to have a "national ID" by around April of 2008. It is also said that there will be an AU, like the EU. I can see where this is all going and very fast.

I've been banking on line for years....paying monthly bills and credit cards etc. NEVER had a problem. Besides, paying by check thru the mail is not the safest way either....there is a lot of mail-theft going on also..........incoming and outgoing. Also, if you are worried about the banks not shredding old documents, well, YOUR canceled checks might not get shredded either. Either way, in this day and age, most of your personal information is already "out there" anyway ! So go ahead and go electronic..........you'll like it !

I have had no problems with on-line banking, bill payments, checks written automatically...the biggest problem I have had is with check payments...often the reciever thinks it is junk mail and tosses! So if you use this service, warn recipiants that the check comes in a "spam" looking envelope with "Payment Inclosed" stamped on front!.
As for juggling money to account to account, no problems. My SS is depositied automatically, I pay my VISA online, etc. As for fraud, you can check your account daily to make sure that what you have paid is the real amount...this is probably the safest way to operate. Ordering checks in the mail is dangerous..can be stolen from mail box. Always pick up mail as soon as it is delivered. Shred all those junk mails with personal info, expecially the ones with checks that you can use from credit card companyies, credit card offers, etc...never just throw something away...throw small pieces away cut up by cross shredding machine.
Good luck

Ms prude here--it took me forever to get a debit card. I got rid of all CC's in '93. I now have a debit and I love it. My daughter does all of her never ending bills on line and checks her account daily to see that it is straight--she has for years and said she would never be able to keep up without the convenience. I do buy a few things on line but have often called and sent a money order. I get my statement on line and I can print any check I have written out, front or back. Still I am cautious.

I pay most of my bills online. I also do most of my shopping online. I still use checks for donations and things like that. My son has a business that is mostly computer generated. He's had a few problems, but nothing he couldnt resolve. I'll never do everything electronically, but I'm old-fashioned. I'm also old, which could account for a lot of it.

I'd have no qualms about doing online banking if the price of postage keeps going up. A good friend of mine works at my bank & during off hours, I asked her how the old documents are handled & she assured me that they are all shredded. When she was hired as a bank teller, that's one thing they were explicitly told. (shred, shred, shred) I do understand your reluctance about doing online banking. Maybe in time, you'll feel more comfy about it. :)

I feel exactly like you do. If they have a toll free number, I will use it rather than risk my email being discovered by hackers. Hackers are really clever and can get in your personal stuff quite easy.

I rarely even go inside my bank. My check goes automatically. The only checks I write are for church (because they don't have credit or debit cards). LOL.

My bank shreds documents. I see them in bags when I go in sometimes.
