here's some basic info for you... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazil

I'm Brazilian, living in Canada for 22 yrs. I go back to visit family often but would never live there again.

Sorry about the rant but I'm sick and tired of Brazilians going on and on about how wonderful Brazil is and glossing over the reality that unless you are one of the white rich elite (about 3% of the pp) life in Brazil is pretty f*cking hard. Brazil is a country of contradictions. It is a racist, corrupt and shallow-minded country. It also has some of the best music, cuisine and culture of the world.

So it's a great country if you are a rich tourist spending your cash in the touristy areas and are well protected from the reality of 97% of the population there. If you live there and are black and/or poor you are sh*t out of luck and it's a very bad place to live. The violence in the poor areas is worse than you can imagine. The average life expectancy for a black male there is around 15 yrs of age. Drug lords control the slums and occasionally whole cities.

Brazilians are know for being "so friendly", that's because they put foreigners on a pedestal and treat them very well. In reality most Brazilians are very superficial people who care more about appearances than substance.

Two things to note about Brazil, it is the #1 destination in the world for child sex tourism and it is leader in the world in plastic surgery. And I don't mean only that Brazilian plastic surgeons are good, I mean it's extremelly common for women to get surgery done regularly. Don't those 2 infamous notes make clear what the priorites in Brazil are? Sex, sex, sex.... Meanwhile children are killed or starved every day on the streets of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo...

I lived in Ipanema for three months. They speak portuguese, the seasons are the opposite becase they're below the equator. It's a relatively poor country. As long as you stay out of the favelas you should be safe. Brazilians are very nice and warm people. What else do you want to know.
