Nine, by Atlanta's Tony Cloninger, 03-July-1966 in San Francisco. Two grand slams and an RBI single, plus a complete game victory, held Mays and McCovey hitless. Aaron, Carty, and Torre also went deep for the Braves. Pretty good day for Tony, eh?

How did the answer above mine get a thumbs-down?

Cloninger has the record, and is one of only four pitchers in the last fifty years to drive in more than 5 during a single game. Robert Person came close to Cloninger a few years ago, driving in seven against the Expos:

I could be wrong, but I know Tony Cloniger hit two grand slams and I have an idea it was actually in the same game. It was back in 1965 or so so my memory may be faulty after 40 plus years but if he did I'm guessing the 8 in one game would be pretty close to the record.
