Because it's a flood myth and story of a deluge sent by an omnipotent deity to destroy civilization, similar to Noah's Ark depicted in Genesis.

I realize that Wikipedia isn't the most credible source of information, but reading these might make you realize that cultures have all kinds of stories about worldwide floods. There are plenty of reasons for why this may be so; one of them being that an actual worldwide flood did occur, and another being that ancient cultures viewed their small territory as the entire world during a local storm.

The Epic is very much connected with the star, Sirius. The importance "esoterically" of Sirius is considerable. For those so inclined :

Sirius is viewed as being the "Spiritual Sun" associated with Earth, an energy concerned with freedom and liberation, and closely attuned to the expression of "Christ Consciousness".

One of the oldest literary works and it is one of the first to discuss the concept of immortality. The flood story of the hero Utnapishtim is very similar to the biblical hero Noah in the book of Genesis and has sparked much debate about which story is older and if one borrowed from the other. Overall, insight into ancient cultures is always worthy of your time and attention.
