I've seen lots of post here from both parties claiming the other party is either too lazy or unpatriotic to serve in the military. So here's a very informal and far-from-scientific poll.... What's your party affiliation (if independent, which way do you lean on the issues)? and Did you serve (or are you serving in the military)?

Just to get things rolling... I'm a democrat (former republican) and I did eight and a half years as a submarine sonar tech in the navy.

Independent, I don't lean left or right but always favor small government and free enterprise. The Liberals always favor heavy social control, the Republicans always favor heavy economic control, and I think the Government that governs least governs best, which puts me at odds with both of them.
Promised a contract as an Electronics Warfare specialist with a $12k bonus, ended up an Undesignated Seaman with no bonus, struck Damage Controlman, left as a DC3. Not bitter and no regrets; I did things the hard way, and everything I have, I earned. The contract was a free ride and fast track to success; I proved, to myself, that I had what it takes on my own. I'm now a professional software engineer.
Just the same, the mistakes and easy to avoid paperwork errors made by my recruiters and those at DEP, my own gullibility prior to entering the military, and my inability to correct anything in basic training or ATD school, that all led to the career path I ended up stuck with, has left me with a valuable sense of perspective with regards to policy and those that make and enforce policy, and I've learned that, often times, individuals make better decisions than groups.

I'm a Soldier and a Veteran.
I've spent the last four years of my life in the Middle East (Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan) fighting this war and defending my country.

First off, thank you for your service.
I am a Republican that used to be a Democrat and a liberal to boot. I cannot serve because of my previous arrest and physical disqualifications.

I consider myself independent leaning more towards libertarian social viewpoints minus guns and abortion.
I never have nor would I ever serve in the military as I feel that I don't owe America s**t so long as I pay taxes.
Go ahead and call me unpatriotic.......because I am.
