No, they don't mate for life. Once a female lays eggs, the male will chase her off and he alone takes care of the nest with eggs and the fry until they become free-swimming.

It's important that you condition the female before you place her with a male, however - if he wants to mate and she isn't ready, the male could kill or injure her. The best way of doing this is to place them in separate containers next to each other, but so they are able to see one another (or you can have them in the same tank, but with a divider). You want to wait until she develops vertical bars and has a definite egg spot/ovipositor (see photos under "female": http://www.flippersandfins.net/faq.htm#malefemale ) And the male has built a bubble nest to show his readiness. Make sure both are fed good quality food (including some foods like bloodworms, blackworms, daphnia, and/or mosquito larvae) to build resources for eggs and the time spent by the male in egg/fry care. As you probably know in bubblenest building bettas the male starts the courting process by trying to attract the female to his bubblenest Is your crowntail building a bubblenest then going after the female?.If the bubble nest is not built the male is not ready therefore the female shows no interest. Just as a point of interest there are many species of betta (not defined as fin shape or color ) Some are even mouth brooders
