Heading to Ochos Rios this week. Heard the road was being updated, any news on this?

The article in USA Today on tourism and road deaths made me curious.

We were on that road last year from the Montego Bay airport to Ocho Rios where we were staying. Some of the roads had been done at that time and were very nice but for the most they were not and weren't the best of driving conditions. Sometimes the road wasn't even there and we were driving on dirt. And, when we hit traffic, it felt like we sat there forever. We had a drive who was familiar with everything of course. Just make sure, that when going back to the airport that you leave yourself a good couple of hours as you do ont know what you may encounter going back. Our drivers car overheated on the way back to airport and we were pulled over for a while.
Have fun!

There is now a new Highway that runs from Ocho Rios to Montego Bay.
I last traveled on the road in December of last year, and it was almost completed. The highway is beautiful and great to drive on, but some people speed (I guess because the surface is so nice), so drive carefully and look out for those jerks.
The major problem would be (as a previous person stated) remembering to drive on the correct side of the road. I'm Jamaican, but I live in the US, and am used to driving on the right, so every time I visit home, it's a challenge to remember where to drive :)
Good luck!!!

I was on it last summer and it was getting close to completion. Whether or not the road is undergoing construction or not, "no problem, mon." We rode on a shuttle bus and the ride was WILD. Jamaican drivers are the craziest I have ever seen. The road has 3 lanes with the center land usually being the passing lane. However, drivers will be in any of them going either way. Sometimes they will pass on the shoulder of the oncoming lane! The ride is quite thrilling. Have a great trip and don't worry about the road.

Hopefully you aren't driving. As Jamaicans drive on the left side, most Americans, Canadians, etc. have a hard time driving and you could easily become a number. Hopefully the place you are staying in Ocho has a bus to pick you up at the airport and you can enjoy some of the local culture on the way to the resort (i.e. red stripe or appleton rum).

Yes, lots of construction going on right now. Expect delays.
