typically, when the check engine light is flashing, it means that the engine is experiencing a catalyst damaging misfire. Usually when the engine has a fault the check engine light will come on and stay on steady. When the engine has a misfire, it can damage the catalyst in the catalytic converter due to the extra air/fuel that is being pumped into the exhaust stream rather than being burnt in the combustion chamber. They want to protect the catalyst from being damaged because they are very expensive due to the precious metals used in them. They flash the check engine light to get your attention, rather than just leave it on steady. Either way, you need to take it to someone and have them look at it to find out why the light is on.

the computer has detected a problem. You need to have the trouble code read so you can fix the problem. The dealership can plug it into a computer to get the codes, or some auto parts stores, like shucjks or auto zone usually have the tool to read it for free. Once you repair or replace the problem, the light will stop blinking
