Its the box connected to my computer with an enthrenet cable which makes my computer access the internet. Its not wireless or anything but is this classed as a router?

If there is only one box connected to the computer that is the modem due to the fact that a router cannot access the internet without it. If there is two boxes then you have a router and a modem now a routers job is to split the connection that your modem provides thats it there are two types of routers the wireless ones usualy have antenas and about 4 ethernet ports. The wired routers the ones you use at home have about 8 ethernet ports but if there is only one port you are defenetly looking at your modem.

Its probably a cable or DSL modem depending on which type of Internet access you have. A home router would sit between your computer and the modem. The router allows other machines to be connected to the same Internet connection as well as providing other functions like some firewall features. There are a handful of modem/router combos available as well which combine both features into one box.
