Believe it or not, it is breaking the law. What would have been better is if you put them into a bag and hung them off of the mailbox. Putting anything other than mail into a mailbox is a federal offense, although most police in the world could care less about tomatos in a mailbox. However, if they get mushy (being 100) and cause damage to the mail, or obstruct the mail, the owners can charge you will malicious damage or obstruction. Sadly, trying to give something away for free always pisses somebody off.
Work in law enforcement.

Next time set up a table next to your mailbox and sell them for a dollar a pound. Or better yet, have some neighbor kids do the selling and split the money with them.

a criminal offense. in straight forward terms the USA Postal provider, the owners of the mailbox and those authorized by utilising the owners of the mailbox (ie renters, houseguests) might bypass in a mailbox. that's a federal offense so do not probability it. purely bypass away flyers on doorsteps.

Unfortunately, it is against the law to put ANYTHING in ANY mail box. EXCEPT U.S. MAIL. It is federal law that governs this. I myself think it sucks as the mail box belongs to me or whoever has one in front of their home. BUT the GOVERNMENT being what they are (DICTATORS) stops us from putting anything in there except mail. But if your neighbors are will to accept them then I'd say go ahead.

The 'junk mailers' do it all the time, except that they don't use tomatoes. Next time put a note that says, "Free tomatoes, just pay shipping and handling".
