That is a very tricky question as I have read so many books and loved some for different reasons so I cannot give you a single reason.

For the sheer scale and otherworldliness - Lord of the Rings, JRR Tolkien.

For the villian - From the Corner of his Eye (Junior Cain ) - Dean R Koontz

For the intensity - American Psycho - Bret Easton Ellis

True story - Damage Done.

Most emotionally moving - One Door Away from Heaven - Dean R Koontz

Best black humour - High Society - Ben Elton

Self help / spiritual guidance i.e the most life changing - The Power of Now - Eckhart Tolle

The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S Lewis- its great cuz its about good overcoming evil and it has a link with the easter story. I like the bible as it gives you encouragement and confidence when you read it. Reading it everyday you get moral advice for the day etc.

I also love The catcher in the rye- its so good especially the main characters personality

Hard choice, but recently Cloud Atlas and Black Swan Green both by David Mitchell. They are brilliant - but so different. He is an absolute master of dialogue - in Black Swan Green in particular you rarely get a straightforward description of a person, but you feel you know the characters through and through just by the way they speak and what they say. These books are amazing.

Rose Madder by Stephen King
The DaVinci Code was great too!
I'm reading The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold right now, it's really good and they are also going to make a movie out of it.

Speaking objectively, it's probably "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. But my favourite would be something by Anne Rice - I'm torn between "The Vampire Lestat" and "The Queen of the Damned".

The Stand by Stephen King. By no means am I a religious man but the Stand brought me back to my catholic upbringing with the Devil against God struggle. The book has the struggle but in modern terms with the good being represented by Mother Abigail and Boulder Colorado and the bad with the Waking Dude and Las vegas. Its a terrific tale and maybe not for all readers but its a classic in my life.
